This is the codebook for the curated data for all the studies in this archive. The curated data includes the data from the original datasets, as well as supplementary data. Variable name: study_name Description of variable: This is the name of the study as saved in the archive Variable type: Text string Variable name: study_date Description of variable: This is the date when the study was published or produced in written form Variable type: Year (numeric) Variable name: study_authors Description of variable: The surnames of the original authors of the study Variable type: Text string Variable name: exp_num Description of variable: This is the number of experiment as reported in the same study. Some studies report multiple experiments, and this variable differentiates between reported experiments. Variable type: Numeric Variable name: study_participant_indicator Description of variable: The original participant number or indicator as reported in the original dataset of the study. In the event that the original participant number is not reported, then a number has been assigned to the participant based on the order of participants in the original dataset. Variable type: Numeric Variable name: curated_archive_participant_indicator Description of variable: This is a unique indicator assigned to each participant's data within the curated archive. Variable type: Numeric Variable name: description_of_target Description of variable: The participant's written or verbal description of the target Variable type: Text string Variable name: type_of_recognition_task Description of variable: The type of identification task that was presented to the target Variable type: Factor Levels: simultaneous lineup, sequential lineup, showup Variable name: target_present_or_absent Description of variable: Whether the target was present or absent in the recognition task Variable type: nominal; factor Levels: TP = target present; TA = target absent Variable name: is_there_a_designated_suspect Description of variable: Whether a target was designated for the target-present and target-absent conditions of the recognition task. Variable type: nominal; factor Levels: designated = suspect was designated; not-designated = suspect was not designated Variable name: recognition_accuracy Description of variable: Whether the partipant made the correct recognition decision for the recognition task that they completed Variable type: nominal; factor Levels: accurate, inaccurate Variable name:recognition_confidence Description of variable: The participant's self-report level of confidence in their recognition decision Variable type: Numeric Variable name:confidence_scale Description of variable: The scale used to measure confidence Variable type: String Variable name: recognition_type_5 Description of variable: A five-way classification of the participant's recognition designation based on the original classication proposed by Wells. This classification is only useful for empirical laboratory studies. These classifications are: If the witness chooses the target in a target-present parade, then they have made a hit. If the witness chooses a foil from a target-present parade, then they made a miss. If the witnesses rejected a target-present parade, then they made an incorrect rejection. For target-absent parades, if the witness chose the suspect, then they made a false alarm. If they chose a foil from a target-absent parade, then they chose a miss.If they rejected a target-absent parade, then they made a correct rejection. Variable type: Factor Levels: hit, miss, false_alarm, correct_rejection, incorrect_rejection Variable name: recognition_type_3 Description of variable: A three-way classification of the participant's recognition designation based on the knwoledge that the police will have about the nature of the parade and the participant or witnesses' decision. If the participant chose the suspect (from a target-present or target-absent parade), then the recognition decision is classified as 'suspect id'. If the witness rejected the parade (regardless of whether it is target-present or target-absent), then the recognition decision is classified as 'rejection'. If the witness chose someone other than the suspect, then decision is classified as 'foil id'. Variable type: Factor Levels: suspect_id, foil_id,rejection Variable name: exp_group Description of variable: The group that the participant was assigned to in the original study Variable type: Factor Levels = control, verbal Variable name: participant_age Description of variable: The age of the participant in years as recorded in the original study Variable type: numeric Variable name: participant_gender Description of variable: The gender of the participant as recorded in the original study Variable type: factor Levels = Female, Male, Unspecified Variable name: exp_delay_minutes_between_enc_and_description Description of variable: The delay in minutes between encoding of the target and when the participant gave the description Variable type: numeric Variable name: exp_delay_minutes_between_descrip_and_recognition Description of variable: The delay in minutes between giving the description and completing the recognition task Variable type: numeric
