-================= W-NORM =================-

W-NORM is a graphical user interface (GUI), written in Perl and GTK2, for the Vowels 1.2 package (http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/vowels/).
Vowels 1.2 is written in the R programming language and is used to manipulate, normalise and plot phonetic and sociophonetic vowel formant data.
R (http://www.r-project.org/) is an environment in which statistical techniques are implemented.

Platform: Windows (tested on Windows 7).

License: GNU GPL 2 (or greater)
The license is present in the "License.txt" file.


-=== To Install ==

* Double click W-NORM-msw-x86-1-4-1.exe and follow the wizard to install W-NORM.


-=== To Run ===-

* Launch the application by double-clicking the W-NORM shortcut on the desktop OR
  Launch the application by clicking the W-NORM link under the W-NORM program group in the start menu OR
  Launch the application by double-clicking the W-NORM_v1.4.exe file under C:\Program Files (x86)\W-NORM\bin

* Make sure that you run this application as Administrator.


-=== Operation ===-

* Choose the input file (see "Pre Processing of Input File" for more information)

* Select the Result Type (Individual Vowels, Speaker Means or Group Means).
 
* Tick the checkboxes for the Normalisation Methods to use.

* Choose the Standard Deviation to plot (None, Bars or Ellipsis

* If Bars or Ellipsis is chosen in the above options, choose a Standard Deviations Multiplier (1, 1.5 or 2).

* Choose the labels to plot (None, Speakers or Vowels).

* Choose the colour of the plot(s).

* Choose the point size of the plot(s).

* Choose the scaling of the plot(s).

* Choose the output format of the plot(s).

* Choose the Output Directory for the data and plots.  The default location is C:\Users\[username]\W-NORM.

* Click Normalise! to start normalising.

* A messagebox will display "Normalisation Finished" after the process is done.  Browse to the Output Directory to find the data and plots.


-=== Pre Processing of Input File ===-

The input file needs to be in a plain text (txt) format for W-NORM to handle it properly.  See http://ncslaap.lib.ncsu.edu/tools/norm/norm1_help.php#templates for more information and templates.
